Jean Ribault
Colt, 2 yrs
Sire: Ribchester (Ireland)
Dam: Examinee (Germany)
Form: The dam is familiar as the mother of Speycaster, whilst her next foal is the exciting Derby prospect Blanchland, who improved with every start this year, culminating in a second in the Zetland Stakes. All the mare's foals are now winners, with Atzeco a dual Group 3 winner in Italy. The sire Ribchester has had two crops to race and is responsible for the Commonwealth Cup second Flaming Rib and the progressive French horse Facteur Cheval. This colt is in line with his siblings in that he is immature and will take time but has an athletic walk and a settled disposition. Most have progressed markedly with age and if Blanchland can emulate his elder siblings he has very bright prospects of making this colt look cheap. Atzeco depreciated from 60K to 37K from foal to yearling and has won £100K; the market has consistently underestimated the dam's offspring. Jean Ribault has now had three starts as a two year old. They have been modest runs to date, but we start this season off a mark of 57 so are hopeful he can progress in his three year old season.

Mortlake
Colt, 2 yrs
Sire: Churchill (Ireland)
Dam: Serenity Dove (United Kingdom)
Form: The third foal out of a mare by Harbour Watch. The dam's sire had a brief two-year old career, but demonstrated exceptional talent when overcoming serious interference to win the Richmond Stakes easily. On the face of it, a son of renowned two-year-old sire Acclamation, who only ran three times at two, is an unlikely source of middle-distance talent, but there is a lot more to consider. Harbour Watch had an equally unfortunate career at stud, with injuries severely limiting his production. He is best known for Pyledriver, a tough and progressive colt who has regularly confounded the sceptics at the highest level. He is also responsible for Wikuku an equally durable multiple Group One winner over one mile in Hong Kong and Baron Samedi, who won the Belmont Gold Cup and was third in the Irish St Leger. He has had few opportunities with his broodmares, coming from relatively modest families and being covered by cheap commercial stallions. On one of the few occasions when one of his daughters was bred to a top line stallion in Night of Thunder, it produced Tacarib Bay, a tough handicapper rated 103 who was third on Champions Day. Acclamation, the sire of Harbour Watch has daughters who have excelled with sons of Galileo: ultra-consistent Broome by Australia and Guineas second Massaat by Teofilo are the most notable examples. Churchill has taken a leap forward this year, as his first crop are now three-year olds, with Arc second Vadeni leading the way. The dam's first foal - by disappointing sire Fascinating Rock - was placed on his second and third starts before being injured. Her second foal was by Footstepsinthesand. He recorded a very fast time at the breeze-ups and made 140,000 before joining Michael O'Callaghan. He had a tall reputation and was ambitiously entered. Unfortunately, he met with a freak accident on the gallops and was seriously injured. Interestingly the normally impatient owners have persevered with him and he remains in training, having undergone a sixteen-month convalescence. Mortlake made his debut at Salisbury in July 2023. Unfortunately, he started slowly and everything happened too quickly for him. However, he learnt from the experience and demolished an 8 strong field at Leicester the following month, winning by a going away 5 lengths. His final appearance of his 2 year old season was at Sandown in the Group 3 Solario Stakes, where he ran a creditable 5th, beaten only 2 ¼ lengths. Mortlake is rated 96 and we are looking forward to his three year old season.
