A £50,000 yearling, Speziato is a half-brother to useful two-year-old Amalfi Coast, and he may have more speed than our typical purchases.
Purchased for 50,000 Gns at Tattersalls Book 2, this colt is one of the rare occasions Jeremy has been excited by an offspring of Zoffany at the sales. The only other yearling by Zoffany that Jeremy has had shortlisted and vetted at the yearling sales was none other than Mother Earth – this years 1000 Guineas winner.
This colt is strongly made, with a much broader pelvis than is typical of the sire’s stock (the hind end of a horse is repsonsible for generating the ‘push’ during the gallop).
The dam is by Footstepsinthesand, whose daughters are usually an influence for speed. The dam, Spicy, has already sired a very fast horse in Amalfi Coast and the family goes back to Kerrera, who was not only fast enough to win a Cherry Hinton, but classy enough to finish 2nd in the 1000 Guineas. In spite of this, we expect this colt to stay a mile. He certainly has the scope to progress with age and may well be the first of our 2yos to see the racecourse next summer. Whereas usually we don’t target Royal Ascot until our horses are older, if everything was to fall right, this colt may even be our first Royal Ascot 2yo runner.
