Rodrigo Diaz (GB)

Colt, 4 yrs
Sire: Golden Horn (GB)
Dam: Kitty Wells (GB)
Trainer: David Simcock

Rodrigo Diaz showed the benefit of starting life on a favourable mark! He has achieved a rare feat by winning three times under circumstances that did not play to his strengths and has learned a tremendous amount in the process. It was a shame that we could not find a valuable race at the end of the season that allowed him to continue his progress, but he will start the new season in a great position. We think that he will improve with increasing distance, but once again he is likely to start over one mile and a half. Once again the likeliest venues are at Newmarket and York.

You will be aware that we have usually selected the most promising athletes from less fashionable sites, but now we have a great prospect by a Derby winning horse of the year in Golden Horn. This is exceptional value, having been bought for less than the cost of the stallion fee. The dam’s first two foals were both rated above 80. The dam herself is a full sister to St Leger winner Milan and Kahara who, when mated to this yearling’s grandsire, produced German Guineas winner Karpino. So there is clearly top class speed, as well as stamina in the pedigree.
